http://in.rediff.com/news/2005/jul/27rain4.htm The highest-ever rainfall recorded in a single day in India shut down the financial hub of Mumbai, snapped communication lines, closed airports and forced thousands of people to sleep in their offices or walk home during the night, officials said Wednesday.
Troops were deployed after the sudden rains -- measuring up to 94.4 centimeters (37.1 inches) in one day in some areas of Mumbai -- stranded tens of thousands of people.
India's previous heaviest rainfall, recorded at Cherrapunji in the Meghalaya state, one of the rainiest places on Earth, was 83.82 centimeters (33 inches) on July 12, 1910, Sharma said.
"Most places in India don't receive this kind of rainfall in a year. This is the highest-ever recorded in India's history. We have to compare it with world records to find out if this was the highest in the world," RV Sharma, director of the meteorological department, told The Associated Press.
The All India Radio reported about 150,000 people were stranded in railway stations across Mumbai, India's main financial center.
Early Wednesday, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, the state's top elected official, called the army, navy and home guards to help with the relief effort.
"Inflatable rafts will be used to reach stranded people. Please try to stay where you are and don't leave your homes," he said.
Tens of thousands of people were stranded for hours on roads in Bombay, and its airport -- one of the busiest in the country -- was shut Tuesday evening. All incoming flights were diverted to New Delhi and other airports.

yes it did! They have changed boundaries of states and Chirapunji went to Meghalaya somtime in the 90's. anyway, chirapunji doesnt get highest rainfall anymore. Its neighbouring village has highest rainfall now.

I heard a liter of drinking water costs about 6 rupees in Cherra punji
People are crazy, at times are strange. I am locked-in tight, I am out of range.
I used to care, but things have changed.

Yep, even though chirapunji recieves highest amount of rainfall, it has drinking water shortage. The reason for this is that chirrapunji is situated in the hills and all the rain water flows down hill leaving little drinking water. By the way, chirapunji doesnt recieve one time only, or one season only heavy rainfall like that in mumbai, but light non stop drizzle throught the year. It hardly sees a rain IIRC.

u are all wrong...
'Punji was always in Meghalaya. its just 15 miles from Bangladesh border in South Meghalaya. this is what i always learnt in school in the 80s.
it is physically impossible for it to be in Assam at any time, unless whole of Meghalaya was a part of Assam too.

i wonder what school SeH n Sherry went to!
Absolutely correct, Cherrapunji was always in meghalaya, at least much before our school books were written...
Meghalaya was a part of Assam till 1970, autonomous from 70 - 72 , later union territory and then a state. Even my school books showed cherrapunji as a part of Assam. I only found out that it is part of meghalaya when I saw a documentary on cherrapunji.
