Editorial Review

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs of Andhra Pradesh is conducting Kala Parichayam from 23rd April to 2nd June, at Sai Srinivasa Brilliant Grammer High School, Dilsukhnagar. Kala Parichayam is classes in classical music, dance and poetry, conducted by Sarma, with the assistance of the staff of the Annamacharya Government College of Music & Dance, High Court Road.

The students will be exposed to both theoretical and practical training in various music and art forms like classical vocal music, classical instrumental music and classical dances, among others. The students will be taught tal, raga, sruthi and laya among others, and a brief history, including contributions of renowned personalities to various music and dance forms.

The course aims to motivate them to learn further by joining regular classes of the music school. It also helps the students appreciate Telugu poetry - the staff of the music schools and colleges are setting tunes to 20 poems by renowned poets Karunasri, Allasani Pedanna, Bommera Pothanna, Thikkanna Somayajulu, Viswanatha Satyanarayana, Srinadhudu, Dasarathi, Jashua, Appa Kaviyam, P Raghava Raju and Tenali Ramakrishna, and the Krishna/Bhaskara/Sumathi/Dasarathi sathakams.

Classes will be held from 7:00am to 9:00am every day. It is open for all categories of people - students, housewives, employees and others - and there is no age bar. The fee for this 40-day camp is Rs. 100, and certificates will be awarded to the trainees at the end of the Kala Parichayam.

Kala Parichayam - a summer special camp organized by the Department of Cultural Affairs across the state - was started in 2004 to develop awareness on cultural and art forms, and to give importance to the propagation of Telugu. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has included Telugu poems in the curriculum of Kala Parichayam 2008. 50,000 students enrolled in Kala Parichayam this year in 800 centres across the state.
