Editorial Review

Samahaara, in association with the University of Hyderabad, the British Library Hyderabad, Yavanika, LIC of India, Hansel School, Ashish Pearls, Planet M, fullhyd.com, Hampshire Plaza Hotel, Jawed Habib Banjara Hills, Clear Vision, and 040, is conducting The Hyderabad Theatre Festival from the 10th June to the 14th at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan auditorium.

Adding to the budding fervour for theatre in the city, and taking passion for the field to another level is Samahaara, the theatre wing of 'The Magic If Creations,' the first theatre company of Hyderabad, and has been around for 5 years now, making efforts take theatre to the young, through plays, theatre workshops, technical support and directorial services.

The Hyderabad Theatre Festival is one of their initiatives in that direction. The event will see theatre groups from Hyderabad showcasing their productions.

On 13th June, the fourth day of the festival, D Fir Dramatics is presenting 'Bravely Fought the Queen', a play written by playwright Mahesh Dattani, and directed by Firdous Shaikh. 'Bravely Fought The Queen' encompasses the story of a wealthy household.

The Trivedi family consisting of two brothers, Jiten and Nitin, who run an advertising agency and are married to sisters; Dolly and Alka. Their mother, Baa, shifting between the two households, is more attached to her memories and her past, rather than to any present reality. Marital frictions, sibling rivalry, the happenings of a typical matriarchal society, are some issues that this play highlights.

The story unfolds in front of a polite visitor, Lalitha, who witnesses the abnormality of the Trivedi household. Lalitha's obsessed with bonsais - and they're symbolic to several situations taking place in the course of the play. So sit back and listen carefully, but as D Fir promises, this play won't let you relax.

Run by Deeksha Marur and Firdous Majeed, final year students of Mass Communication and Journalism, D-Fir was conceptualized with the intention of shattering the elitist veneer cloaking the art. They plan to take theatre to schools and colleges, and make it accessible to everyone, and hope to bring together the large market of aspiring dramatists, playwrights and actors, who in turn, wish to bring about a revolution in the field of theatre in the twin cities. Conceptualized during the summer of 2008, they staged their first production, Tax Free, in November 2008.

The schedule for the The Hyderabad Theatre Festival is as follows:

10 June Main Raahi Masoom - By Rangadhara Theatre Stream
11 June Ayn Rand's Night Of January 16th - By Nasr Dramatic Society
12 June Vijay Tendulkar's 'Anji' - By Nishumbita
13 June Mahesh Dattani's 'Bravely Fought The Queen' - By D Fir Dramatics
14 June Neil Simon's 'The Good Doctor' - By Dramanon

Passes of Rs. 100, Rs. 200 and Rs. 500 are available at the venue, and at Planet M stores (Banjara Hills Road No. 1, Himayat Nagar, Hyderabad Central, Madhapur & Parklane). Booking can also be done on www.bookmyshow.com.
