Welcome the monsoon in classic style through Barkha Ritu, a cultural festival, as part of which a Hindustani classical music concert is being conducted at the Convention Centre of the Hyderabad Marriott. The concert is on 19th July, at 6:30pm.
The evening will be a musical extravaganza with some notable names in Hindustani classical music. Shounak Abhisheki (vocal), Pt. Shivakumar Sharma (santoor) accompanied by Pt. Bhawani Shankar (pakhawaj), Yogesh Samsi (tabla), Uday Kulkarni (harmonium) and Charudutt Phadke (tabla) will perform at the concert.
Shivkumar Sharma was born in Jammu to the singer Pandit Uma Dutt Sharma. His father started teaching him vocals and tabla when he was just 5. He also started learning the santoor at the age of 13, and gave his first public performance in Bombay in 1955.
Shivkumar Sharma is credited with single-handedly making the santoor a popular classical instrument. Sharma recorded his first solo album in 1960 and composed the music of Shantaram's Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje in 1965. In 1967, he teamed up with flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and Pandit Brijbhushan Kabra to produce a concept album, The Call of the Valley, which turned out to be one of the greatest hits in Indian classical music.
He has also composed music for many Hindi films in collaboration with Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, starting with Silsila in 1980. They came to be known as the 'Shiv-Hari' music duo. Some of the movies they composed music for which were big musical hits are Faasle (1985), Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991) and Darr (1993).
Shounak Abhisheki, son and disciple of Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, combines the Agra and Jaipur styles of Hindustani classical music. He trained under Kamaltai Tambe of the Jaipur Gharana, and also under his father. He also performs special programs like Swarabhishek, Tulsi Ke Ram & Kabir and Marathi Abhangwani based on on his father's compositions. He has performed at major music festivals in India, and in and a series of concerts in USA, UK, USSR, the Arabian Gulf and Thailand.
Yogesh Samsi is the son of vocalist Pandit Dinkar Kaikini. He was initiated into the tabla by his father at the tender age of 4, and later received guidance under Pandit H Taranath Rao. However, it was under the gifted tutelage of the legendary Ustad Alla Rakha that Yogesh received intense training for 23 years, and matured into a fine tabla player. He has accompanied almost all the top ranking instrumentalists, vocalists and dancers of India, including Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pt. Dinkar Kaikini, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Pt. Birju Maharaj.
