Editorial Review

If you're reading this, you're more blessed than the millions of kids in our country who can't afford to even dream of school. And if the thought makes you uncomfortable enough to make you pitch in with your 2 cents, or better still, your time, head to Jala Vihar on the 13th of December, for Walk On '09.

Walk On is being organized by Aashayein Foundation, an NGO dedicated towards the cause of education. Through the event, Aashayein intends to create an opportunity for people to involve themselves to make a difference to the lives of kids from economically backward sections of society. Walks have earlier been held in Bangalore, in 2008, and earlier this year as well.

The walk will trace a 5 km route, beginning from Jala Vihar to Prasads and back to Jala Vihar. People from several walks of society, including school children, students and professionals, are expected to participate. The event also consists of a cultural program by the children associated with Aashayein.

Aashayein Foundation was formed on May 19th 2007, by a group of IT professionals in Bangalore. In its 3 years of existence, the organization has expanded its operations to Hyderabad, too, and has recently set up base in Kolkata and Chennai as well. It has over 1,500 members, most of whom are between 20 and 30 years old, or are from the IT industry.

Aashayein conducts several activities to further its cause. Some of them are the Sunday Breakfast Activity (as part of which kids of various ashrams are served breakfast on Sunday), Bacche Mann Ke Sacche (which sponsors the education of slum children - 57 in Hyderabad and 220 in Bangalore, so far), and Pustaka Abhiyana (an infrastructure-providing initiative, as part of which 12,000 notebooks have been distributed in 14 schools in rural areas).

Tickets for Walk On start from Rs. 300, with different slabs including Rs. 500, Rs. 1,000, Rs. 1,500 & Rs. 2,500. Ticket prices for students start from Rs. 100. An 80G Tax Exemption receipt will be issued for the amount you spend on tickets.

Every child comes with a right to be literate so as to be able to read and write his/her own fate.
Let's give them their right.
