Alankritha Art Gallery is presenting an exhibition of photographs titled Absolute Hyderabad, by Lakshmi Prabhala, from 30th January to 8th February.
Hyderabad is a city of many faces. The glitzy facade of the Hi-Tech city reflects software giants and globe-trotting professions; hep girls and boys chill in pubs and malls; women in designer wear try hard to get into Page 3; men zoom around the roads of Jubilee Hills in their BMWs flashing the latest gadgets. This doesn't faze Lakshmi's attention.
In the gallis of Charminar, another world exists: an old, bearded man sells bangles in Laad Bazaar; another stands behind an array of ittar bottles; a man leisurely drinks kadak chammach chai in an Irani cafe; a child spins tops; another runs behind a cycle tyre; a woman and her daugter stand at the colourful door of their house just watching the world go by. There are the visuals that have found their way into Lakshmi's lenses and frames.
An independent self-taught photographer, Lakshmi is fascinated by old Hyderabad, and feels that this city is charming and has a distinct identity. Using the arches of the famous as well as relatively unknown monuments to frame her subjects, she captures the spirit of the city.
An electrical and electronics engineer, Lakshmi has had a career in software design and development. The sketching and painting she did in the 5th grade was about all the formal training she has had in the arts. Changing paths, she freelanced as photo-editor at a publishing house, and then took a sabbatical to work as an independent photographer. She tries her hand at various genres, but is drawn more to street photography.
