A Bharatnatyam Recital With A Difference

In a pleasant departure from recent classical dance recitals in the city, Shilparamam saw a Bharathanatyam performance by Bangalore-based Varun Sharma a few days back.

A disciple of Guru P Praveen Kumar, Sharma gave an interpretation of the ancient dance form, especially in set-pieces where he fluidly transitioned between the various roles he portrayed - male-female, deity-adherent etc. - that was sublime, and all the more admirable given it was a solo venture.

Also, a male practitioner of the classical dance - traditionally considered a forté of women - taking to stage drew in a lot of crowds, including ambling passers-by, who greatly appreciated the youngster's passion for the art form.
